peace, love, and faith
Salam,This is my entry into the photography competition (which was also on our old banner, now seen in the column to the right of our blog haha) during Texas' MSA Showdown early 2011 I just wanted to share the story behind it.
theme: peace, love, and faith
description:"The hijab is known as the symbol of Muslim Women. Generally thought of as a mere head covering, hijab is not only a modest dress code but also an obligation to a series of manners and respect that stem from the nature of modesty.
My purpose and technique to taking this photograph is a single eight-second long exposure shot with strategically positioned and timed lighting. This resulted in the transparency of the woman’s form before an array of veils. This reveals how hijab is not only a head covering but also a token of modesty that lies within us. The different hijabs reflect on the different colorful personalities that make up the different kinds of Muslim women that are united under the same idea of modesty, faith, and love for the Almighty and each other.
The bright, sparkling colors and patterns are a testimony that hijab doesn’t mean to conceal (apart from hair) passions, ambitions, and goals, but to also give women a sense of individuality and freedom, especially in the U.S. I personally see hijab as proclamation to my faith, my morals, and my own ability to make decisions as an independent woman growing up in the West."
A bit cliche, no? Haha rereading this makes me cringe a bit but it did well for me in the competition :)
Until next time iA,
Astrid
