I wanted to start this blog post with a list of lame lyrics. Then I realized that their are just way too many.
Don't get me wrong. I listen to the radio. Have the latest songs popping in my head all the time, and rock out to them at parties. Yet at the same time, I can't get over how demeaning and brainwashing they can be. I mean, honestly what do all the popular artists sing about these days? Sex, drugs, fame, love, pride, partying, glorifying youth and being the boss of your life. If you are just having fun with your friends and the songs are playing I don't personally think its a big deal, but when those songs become the generic idea of what you live your life by (which are usually morally wrong for a Muslims).. well thats when I get uncomfortable with the matter haha
So. What can you do? If you just want to listen to some tunes that don't make you feel crappy or uncomfortable you may want to research and make your own playlist with motivational, inspirational and songs with depth and meaning.
Believe it or not there are a lot of very talented artists in the Muslim Community who are involved in music. So, I thought I would share a few of my personal faves. :)
So back in my early years of high school my friend Sadia introduced my sisters and I to a hip-hop band called, Outlandish. The group is made up of three guys based in Denmark. Their lyrics are mainly in English but there are parts with Spanish, Urdu, Arabic and Danish. My favorite songs by them are:
Also, of course Sami Yusuf! The famous Sami Yusuf has many beautiful songs both instrumental versions and ones without music:
Another is Dawud Warnsby. This is a poem/song that I think he sings beautifully mashallah.
Maher Zain, is a relatively new artist to me. I just recently heard about him. He will be visiting the Richardson, TX area soon for a concert! You should check it out! :)
Well I hope this compiled list sparks your interest in some of the Muslim artists in the industry! If you have any other songs that you want to share don't forget to add them in the comments! :)
I first saw this Hello Kitty purse in one of Kandee Johnsons videos about 2 years ago( It is no longer up but you can see it in this Video!) About 2 weeks before my birthday and she was giving it away for like some random subscriber (which was not me haha). Since I fell in love with it at first sight my dear sister decided to get it for my birthday (:
Kandee does give the website to the purse at bag haus. The only problem was that it is $65. And I don't have that just sitting around my house
for about $45 I believe (But the price has gone up to $55) It is still cheaper then Baghaus! and it came in like 4 days to my house. The bag is super sturdy I've had it for ages now, and it carries EVERYTHING. No tears, no malfunctions. And it is so cute! I always get compliments for it so I felt the need to make a post about it and how you can get it! So definitely go for it! My favorite part of this bag is that they are peekaboo with super cute prints (:
Salam!
My favorite Disney princess of them all! Belle :)
Belle
I'm sure most of you know who Belle is, especially with Beauty and the Beast 3D out! She is by far my favorite princess, and here is why
She gives up her freedom to protect her dad.
She loves books (!!!) She is probably the reason why I started loving books as a child too.
She looks past the Beast's looks and falls in love with him.
She's extremely intelligent.
She yearns for adventure outside her "provincial town".
She's sarcastic lol
She's kind.
Because she's so awesome, she deserves her own post! (Or maybe because I didn't have time to do Jasmine yet, but I prefer the former).
Outfit no. 1: Blue Town Girl
Winter outfit for you lovely ladies! The sleeves and collar are similar to her blouse. I added a book necklace for her love of books. Keep a natural face, Belle is so natural here! I tried to find a purse that was similar to a basket, as she is holding one here.
Outfit no. 2: Belle's Wintry Outfit
Okay, I LOVE her outfit in itself. Definitely very fashionable for a cartoon. So I kept the general cape idea. If you find one with white fur, props to you, because I couldn't! I added a foxtail on the purse instead.
Outfit no. 3 and 4: Tale as Old as Time
Definitely a super romantic scene, and I LOVE the song. Here's my casual touch to it.
And here's my formal/wedding touch to it. Don't forget the rose! It's an important part of the movie.
I will try to post Jasmine before the week is over! Hope you like them. :)

New York Fashion Week's 2012 Trend Report has eight trends that are expected to be the strongest of spring. I personally liked the The Princess Diaries collection because of all the ball gowns and floral suits. If you like Princesses check out Yassmin's Hijabi Princess Collection!
The Princess Diaries
"Floor-length skirts in silk taffeta, tulle, and organza are paired with everything from boxy lace to spandex tube tops to address everyone’s inner princess—even those who favor biker boots."
Jason Wu
Oscar de la Renta
For the Birds
Marc Jacobs
Suno
Faded Glory
Calvin Klein
I feel that these garments are already quite conservative in respect to skin coverage and can be modified pretty easily to make them even more hijabi friendly :P
About a week ago I noticed my younger sister laying across her bed propped on her elbows reading. Her expression was really intense and focused so I read the title of novel she was reading.
Snow flower and the Secret fan.
written by Lisa See.
I read this my freshman year of high school. It is a fantastic novel and I have to say this is the novel that pulled me into the reading world (of actual well written books lol). Here is the summary on the back:
Alanguage kept a secret for a thousand years forms the b
ackdrop for an unforgettable novel of two Chinese women whose friendship and love sustains them through their lives.
This absorbing novel – with a storyline unlike anything Lisa See has written before – takes place in 19th century China when girls had their feet bound, then spent the rest of their lives in seclusion with only a single window from which to see. Illiterate and isolated, they were not expected to think, be creative, or have emotions. But in one remote county, women developed their own secret code, nu shu – "women's writing" – the only gender-based written language to have
been found in the world. Some girls were paired as "old-sames" in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.
An old woman tells of her relationship with her "old-same,"
their arranged marriages, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood—until a terrible misunderstanding written on their secret fan threatens to tear them apart. With the detail and emotional resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha ,Snow Flower and the Secret Fan delves into one of the most mysterious and treasured relationships of all time—female friendship.
ly fell in love with the story. The way See writes I have never seen before. She brings out the Chinese culture and history in such a s
ophisticated mater into Lilly's life (Protagonist). This novel leaves you in tears from beginning to end in such a beautiful way. See's style of writing keeps you wanting for more and it never loses your attention. The literature of this novel is phenomenal and how it portrays the Chinese life of Lilly and her friend Snow Flower.
It goes through Lilly's life as a 'Mi
lk child' in her 'Daughter Days' and how she is forced to bind her feet in one of the most excoriating description ever. Lilly's feet go to the smallest size of 3 inches.
Cinderella and Ariel are finally here! They are numbers 3 and 4 in this hijabi princess project.
Cinderella
Cinderella was probably the Disney princess I watched the most when I was younger and without a doubt, she is the most famous. Here is why I love her
She is super patient and puts up with that horrible stepmom and stepsisters.
She kept on dreaming.
She made sure she got the key to get out of the room when her stepmom locked her in. Most girls in the 1950s (when it was made) would sit obediently and take the oppression.
She was incredibly kind to animals.
In the sequels, she forgives Anastasia for all that she's done to her.
Outfit no. 1: Cinderella the maid
I tried to use the color scheme to mimic her outfit. I love trousers and the oxfords are similar to her shoes. Tuck the blue shirt in the trousers and top off with a nice oversized cardigan. Use the naked palette for a nice natural look!
Outfit no. 2: Pink dress
Personally, I like this dress better than her blue one. Why can't we all have little mice to make us cute clothes? :/
The emphasis on this dress is the shoulders and bows. I used a puffy shouldered dress. I couldn't find one with a bow on it, so I thought it would be neat to wear that blouse with the bow on it under the dress and then take the bow out to give it a little more style. The pearl necklace is just like the one Anastasia ripped in the movie, but instead of wearing it around the neck (It wouldn't show for us hijabis!), put it on top of your hijab. Get creative with it :)
Outfit no. 3 and 4: The ballgown
This dress has lots of sparkles, so I liked it as a fancy dinner outfit. Top a sequin dress/shirt with a white blazer and black skinny jeans.
In case you're going to a wedding, wear the white long sleeve shirt under this gorgeous flowy dress. Pearl bracelets give it the elegant touch. I included plastic (you'd probably break glass) shoes. I also love the pearl clutch and blue eyeshadow!
Ariel
Now I didn't watch The Little Mermaid that often because, well, my dad didn't like her outfit lol but the few times I did I absolutely loved her! Here are reasons why:
She's spunky and adventurous,
She loves learning
She's super passionate
She learned to stand her ground
Outfit no. 1: Under the sea
So when I first decided to look for a dress for this, I originally intended to go with a green mermaid dress. I then found this extremely hijabi friendly Versace dress on Pinterest and I'm absolutely in love! We're not all rolling in money, so just go with a green mermaid dress if you must. :) I also love the shell clutch! Make sure you use a lot of pink blush because I feel like Ariel has very pink cheeks.
Outfit no. 2: The Pink Dress
Wear a layered blazer since her dress has a layered effect. I included red pants because of her flaming red hair, but you can stick with black like the model if you want (or a red hijab). I love these Jeffrey Campbell shoes. I included the fork necklace because of the hilarious scene where she brushes her hair with a fork and Eric looks at her funny.
Outfit no. 3: Kiss da girl
I loved this scene cause it was romantic and adorable. I included a white blouse similar to the one she is wearing. You can either tuck it in the trousers or wear it oversized with skinnier pants. I included a turquoise hijab, similar to her skirt. I love the bow in her hair, so stick a navy bow on your hijab! The crab necklace is to pay respects to the famous Sebastian. Her blue eyes stand out especially in this scene so wear blue contacts if you like!
Belle and Jasmine are next! :)
Hope you like them! I take requests, and tell me you think.

Fashion Week: Week One!
-Dallah Abd
Okay, so I was looking through some of the pre-fall 2012 Fashion Collections and there are so many pieces that I fell in love with, so I thought I should share. Everything just looks so elegant, chic and modest! So many workable outfits that are simply gorgeous and even work with hijab! Any girl would be totally comfortable! Here are some of Chanel's runway photos featuring the Paris-Bombay themed collection. This collection was "inspired by the jewels, colors, and fabrics of India" :
This is my entry into the photography competition (which was also on our old banner, now seen in the column to the right of our blog haha) during Texas' MSA Showdown early 2011 I just wanted to share the story behind it.
theme: peace, love, and faith
description:
"The hijab is known as the symbol of Muslim Women. Generally thought of as a mere head covering, hijab is not only a modest dress code but also an obligation to a series of manners and respect that stem from the nature of modesty.
My purpose and technique to taking this photograph is a single eight-second long exposure shot with strategically positioned and timed lighting. This resulted in the transparency of the woman’s form before an array of veils. This reveals how hijab is not only a head covering but also a token of modesty that lies within us. The different hijabs reflect on the different colorful personalities that make up the different kinds of Muslim women that are united under the same idea of modesty, faith, and love for the Almighty and each other.
The bright, sparkling colors and patterns are a testimony that hijab doesn’t mean to conceal (apart from hair) passions, ambitions, and goals, but to also give women a sense of individuality and freedom, especially in the U.S. I personally see hijab as proclamation to my faith, my morals, and my own ability to make decisions as an independent woman growing up in the West."
A bit cliche, no? Haha rereading this makes me cringe a bit but it did well for me in the competition :)
I have a very strange obsession with animated princesses. I know some of them don't encompass all the values I would want in a daughter/sister, but they really do reflect the ideal girl in their times. I was inspired by this lovely blogger who created gorgeous outfits inspired by the princesses (you should definitely check her out!) and I thought it would be awesome to make hijabi ones as well. :) I definitely plan on doing all 10 Disney princesses, Disney heroins (like Esmeralda) and some more non-Disney characters (Anastasia, Thumbelina, etc.) I hope you enjoy!
Snow White
Snow White is the first Disney princess (the movie came out in the late 1930s!) I'm sure most of you know her story! If you haven't, you should definitely plan a movie day where you can watch old children's favorites to relive that childhood experience. Here are reasons why I love her:
She is super patient, even when her own freakin stepmom tried to kill her
She is optimistic and happy
She's super kind
I put together this outfit based on the above outfit that she wears for most of the movie:
I found that wearing a yellow skirt (like Snow White does) was a bit too unsettling for me, so I switched the colors! Tuck in the yellow shirt and wrap and red belt around your waist for the perfect touch :) I stuck with a black hijab because red seemed too bold for me.
Outfit number 2:
I liked the puffiness of these sleeves. The colors are a bit bold, you gotta be brave!
Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
I love all the princesses, and although Aurora is included, she is probably my least favorite one. She's in the movie for a total of 14 minutes. Otherwise, here are the things I like about her:
She doesn't care whether or not the person she marries is a prince
She's also patient and kind
Here's an outfit that's a bit on the fancy side:
Perfect for weddings! I absolutely looove this dress (ignore the slit on the side). To make it casual, you could just substitute the dress for a simpler one, and top off a cardigan instead of a white undershirt. Aurora wears a gold necklace, so I thought this necklace was a pretty addition. I also included a gold headband that you could wear on top of your pink hijab, or have it peaking on top of the underpiece hijab. And don't you just love the gold owl ring? Looks just like the one in the movie!
Just be creative!
Keep on the lookout for Cinderella and Ariel next :)
(I created the outfits on Polyvore and the princess pictures are retrieved from Google)
